The following discussion describes how Martus is used to report human rights abuses. The Martus software is designed to allow an entry-level computer user to effectively and securely collect testimonies with 15-30 minutes of training.

Martus in Use: A Typical scenario

Users are introduced to Martus independently or at regional trainings. During these workshops, instructors present an overview of the software, demonstrate the tool and then offer a hands-on practice session. Interested users are given a Martus CD with server information printed on an accompanying piece of paper.

Alternatively, users are made aware of Martus through other channels, navigate themselves through the online demo and download the Martus software and accompanying documentation.

Users install the software on a computer and create an account with a user name and password. They open the Martus software, which looks and operates like a simplified version of an email client like Outlook Express or Eudora. When users wish to store information about an incident or abuse, they create a bulletin which, by default, is kept secret and available only to the group who generated that Martus account. The Martus software automatically records information in the bulletin, such as the group creating it and the date created (similar to email). The user then types in a subject, keywords, the date of the incident, a short summary and a more extended description. This data is then saved as a bulletin which can be updated.

Martus automatically copies and backs up bulletins that have been saved to a designated Martus Server when the computer is connected to the Internet. Martus users can choose from several publicly available back-up servers hosted by leading non-profit organizations throughout the world. Backing up bulletins to a Martus server ensures that users can have access to their bulletins in case of computer loss or theft. The server operators can view the user's contact information only if the user chooses to send this data to the server.

Private data in Martus is encrypted and completely confidential. Server operators do not have the ability to decrypt data backed up to the servers. The operators can only see that data of some sort has been stored on the servers. After a bulletin has been designated as final or "sealed" by the user, it cannot be altered, ensuring that even an unauthorized user who may have obtained access cannot delete the user's records.
